What is the point of baby powder?

Why are we suppose to use baby powder on infants? What is the point of baby powder?
It is suppose to help keep the skin dry and prevent chaffing.

I use it for myself more then my daughter, she doesn't need it unless she has a rash.

I put it on after showers, the back of my leg, under my boobs, between my thighs, and under my belly and it helps me feel fresh all day and I don't itch as much in those areas.

Just do not use any with cornstartch, it makes a breeding grounds for bacteria. What is the point of baby powder?
Helps keep them dry by drying up the moisture that might irritate and cause a rash. It also makes the lil darlings smell good!! Pops
well for my son, he's such a chunky monkey and has so many rolls, that i put powder on him to keep moisture out of his rolls so he doesn't develop an infection or anything in his cute little rolls :)
Keeps skin dry, reduces chafing.
If you sprinkle it on you you will get a baby
Baby powder is used so the babies skin doesnt get sore from diapering and because the skin is fragile and the urine can cause sores, so the powder sucks away the liquid. However, you arent supposed to use baby powder anymore because studies have shown that its bad for babies lungs. I use baby powder lotion from huggies. It goes on like a lotion, but dries like a powder and will still work the same but doesnt have the effects of the powder the the normal stuff,
Oh, lord. Now the kids are gonna die if we put baby powder on them. What's next, disposable diapers are causing babies to have badonka donk butts when they turn 40?

they actually tell you not to use baby powder any more. it can be easily inhaled by the baby and cause respiratory problems in infants. it also gets sticky when it gets wet and gets stuck in the crevices. use a lotion instead or vaseline.
Actually, SadieJane is correct, baby powder should not be used on infants as it can coat their lungs and cause respiratory problems. It's fine for older (2 to 3 years and up) children, though. :)
It keeps their skin dry. It will help against diaper rash!
absorb moisture
Baby poweder is used to absorb moisture to brevent cahffing and diaper rash. It also smells good. You must take care, however, not to go overboard and use too much. You also need to exercise care when applying it to the baby that the powder doesn't waft upward and the baby inhale it, in that, if the baby has asthma or other bronichal problems, as this can be problematic.
It reduces friction.

Friction causes bed sores and rashes.

Baby powder also soothes rashes and skin in general.
it's soothing on ur skin.

it's like a thin barrier protecting your babies skin. some pampers (i think) make some kids have bad ugly reactions. don't go cheap.

but baby powder is good for making your skin feel soft too.
I never used it on either of my boys and both were chubby. They never had diaper rash or chafing or any problems like that. If you change often enough, you shouldn't have to since today's disposeable diapers are so absorbant. Now, if you use cloth diapers it might be different because their skin will be wetter and supposidly the baby powder protects from wetness. However, I personally would recommend Balmex Diaper Rash Cream. It smells reasonably nice. If you do prefer powder make sure you go for a ';pure cornstarch'; powder as opposed to one with Talc which docs now say is dangerous for baby to breathe.
Sadie is absolutely right, your not supposed to use powder, it does go into their lungs...
